Community Hero Natasha Bates Brings History to Life in Auckland
Volunteer Natasha Bates has been recognized as the latest recipient of the Community Hero Award for her significant contributions to the Howick Historical Village in Auckland. This award highlights individuals who make a positive impact in their communities. Natasha has dedicated over 21 years to volunteering at the village, taking on various roles that showcase her commitment and passion for preserving local history.
The Howick Historical Village, a popular attraction that recreates life in the 19th century, hosts events known as Live Days. During these events, Natasha operates the kitchen in the grand homestead Puhi Nui. She prepares traditional recipes that not only delight visitors but also provide a sensory experience of historical cooking methods. Using a Victorian-era coal range, Natasha engages with guests, sharing stories about the dishes she prepares, the ingredients used, and their historical significance.
Lexie Palmer-Gapper, the general manager of the Howick Historical Village, nominated Natasha for the award. In her nomination, she stated, “By making her favourite heritage recipes, Natasha brings the past to life for our visitors through the smells, sounds, tastes – and heat! – of cooking.” Her enthusiasm and willingness to share her knowledge enhance the visitors’ experience, creating a lively atmosphere that connects them to history.
The Community Hero Award is sponsored by New World Howick, and recipients receive a $50 gift card and recognition in local media. To nominate someone deserving of this recognition, community members can visit the Times website for more details.
Natasha’s dedication reflects her belief in the importance of community engagement and education. Her work not only preserves history but also fosters a sense of connection among visitors, making them feel part of the living history being recreated at Howick Historical Village.
As the village continues to celebrate its rich heritage, volunteers like Natasha remind us of the vital role individuals play in keeping local history alive. Community members are encouraged to acknowledge those who inspire and contribute positively, ensuring that the spirit of volunteerism thrives in the region.
