The Howick Volunteer Coastguard plays a critical role in ensuring safety on the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, responding to emergencies and providing assistance to those in need. According to Scott Kennedy, executive officer and a qualified crew member, the organization covers the entire Hauraki Gulf, extending to Great Barrier Island. “We go wherever we’re asked to go,” Kennedy stated. The Howick Volunteer Coastguard is one of six Coastguard units in Auckland, all of which share responsibility for the same body of water. Each unit operates on a duty rotation, with members available to respond to emergency calls on their designated duty day.

Operational Response and Community Engagement

The unit responds to a variety of incidents, including boat breakdowns, medical emergencies, and search and rescue operations. In the fiscal year 2024/2025, the Howick Volunteer Coastguard attended fewer incidents compared to the previous year, assisting 306 people compared to 387 people in 2023/2024. Despite this decline, the commitment to maritime safety remains unwavering, with volunteers on call 24/7.

Beyond emergency responses, the group actively participates in community events, promotes boating safety, and offers education and outreach programs. On weekends, members engage in training exercises, honing their skills while preparing for potential callouts. “We’re on the water every weekend,” Kennedy noted, explaining that these training sessions typically last around five hours, although they can extend significantly during larger operations.

The Howick Volunteer Coastguard currently comprises approximately 60 active volunteers, including around 35 wet crew members who go out on the boats. Other volunteers contribute through maintenance, fundraising, and administrative tasks. Kennedy emphasized the need for continuous recruitment, as volunteer turnover is a reality. “We always have a callout for new people because volunteers come and go,” he said.

Training and Qualifications for Volunteers

Volunteers progress through various levels of training, with the ultimate goal of becoming a skipper or master of the vessel. Kennedy mentioned that achieving operational crew status can take between 18 months to three years, depending on the individual’s dedication and the completion of required training modules. The unit mandates that each boat must have at least one master or skipper and two qualified crew members on board for safety before departing.

The organization is inclusive, with a minimum age of 16 years for new volunteers and no upper age limit. This diversity is reflected in the membership, which includes individuals with varying levels of experience. Kennedy highlighted a volunteer in his late seventies who remains active on the water, demonstrating the enduring commitment of many members. “He runs all the boating education courses for us in Howick,” Kennedy remarked, showcasing the value of experienced personnel within the unit.
