Local Leader Krish Naidu Seeks Seat on Howick Local Board
Krish Naidu is running for a seat on the Howick Local Board, representing the Flat Bush subdivision in the upcoming Auckland Council elections, which conclude on October 11. Naidu, a long-time resident of Flat Bush, expressed his pride in standing as a candidate for a community that he knows intimately.
“I live right here amongst you – I walk the same streets, face the same challenges, and, like you, I want the very best for our community,” Naidu stated. He emphasized that if elected, he will prioritize Flat Bush’s interests on the Howick Local Board, which is the largest in Auckland.
Flat Bush is rapidly growing, and Naidu highlighted the necessity for development to keep pace with this expansion. He advocates for enhanced facilities, infrastructure, and opportunities that genuinely support local residents. “Flat Bush deserves its fair share,” he asserted, pointing out the urgent need for a public library, community center, and aquatic and leisure hub.
Having arrived in Auckland from Fiji as an international student at the age of 15, Naidu has built a life in this community over the past 25 years. At 40 years old, he brings extensive experience in grassroots community service, governance, and leadership. His background includes significant involvement in youth, education, ethnic, Pacific, and civic sectors.
Naidu currently serves as co-chair of the council’s Ethnic Communities Advisory Panel. He is also an appointed member of Health NZ’s Northern Regional Consumer Council and an elected member of the school board for Ormiston Primary, Junior, and Senior College. Additionally, he is the president of the Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ, a White Ribbon Ambassador, and a senior business lecturer and program manager.
He outlined his vision for the community, emphasizing “better ratepayer value and respect for residents.” Naidu’s platform includes plans for smarter, sustainable infrastructure, road safety upgrades, and improved public transport access. He aims to see key projects like the Eastern Busway and Airport Rapid Transit completed.
Naidu also advocates for the revitalization of Ormiston Town Centre, weekly rubbish collection, and stronger measures against illegal dumping. He calls for cleaner, safer parks with improved facilities, increased investment in multicultural events, and enhanced community safety through better lighting, CCTV, and collaboration with police and local groups.
A crucial aspect of Naidu’s campaign focuses on fostering genuine civic engagement. He acknowledged that many residents feel disconnected from council decisions and stressed the importance of bringing decision-making to the community. “That means more local forums, outreach to diverse communities, translation of key information, and digital platforms that make it easier to participate,” he explained.
Naidu is determined to move away from superficial consultation practices and instead promote authentic engagement where residents can actively shape outcomes. As the election date approaches, his commitment to Flat Bush and its residents appears stronger than ever.
