On January 27, 2026, SHEIN, a global online retailer of fashion and lifestyle products, received the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) Management System Certificate from TÜV Rheinland Greater China. This recognition was awarded during a ceremony attended by key representatives, including Lucas Liu, Warehousing Operations Director of SHEIN, and Vincent Chen, General Manager of Customized Solutions and Corporate Sustainability Services at TÜV Rheinland.

Significance of Zero Waste Initiatives

The awarding of this certificate highlights the growing importance of zero waste initiatives in corporate sustainability efforts. As global discussions around environmental responsibility intensify, organizations are increasingly prioritizing waste reduction and sustainability as core objectives. The Zero Waste to Landfill Management System requires firms to implement comprehensive waste management measures across all stages of the waste life cycle, including source reduction, reuse, and recycling.

To assess SHEIN’s readiness for certification, TÜV Rheinland conducted a thorough evaluation of waste management practices at 15 of the company’s sites. This assessment included document reviews, personnel interviews, and on-site inspections to verify the effectiveness of SHEIN’s waste management systems. The evaluation focused on two main dimensions: management processes and quantitative performance indicators, ensuring that all sites met the rigorous requirements of the management system.

Commitment to Sustainability

During the ceremony, Lucas Liu emphasized that sustainability is a fundamental aspect of SHEIN’s long-term strategy. He stated, “As the global fashion industry accelerates toward sustainable development, waste and pollution reduction, the low-carbon and intelligent upgrading of supply chains has become both an industry consensus and a source of core competitiveness.” Liu highlighted the company’s achievements in enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions across its logistics and warehousing operations.

Vincent Chen of TÜV Rheinland remarked on the significance of the certification, noting, “This certification reflects the outcome of the assessment conducted in accordance with the Zero Waste to Landfill Management System requirements.” He reiterated TÜV Rheinland’s commitment to facilitating green transformation within various industries and supporting enterprises in their efforts to enhance waste management practices.

The Zero Waste to Landfill Management System developed by TÜV Rheinland aligns with China’s national initiative for ‘Zero-Waste City’ projects and employs the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) methodology to guide companies in optimizing waste management. Thus far, over 80 factories across diverse sectors, including beverages, food, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, have successfully achieved certification under this framework.

SHEIN’s attainment of the Zero Waste to Landfill Management System Certificate underscores its commitment to sustainability and positions the company favorably within the evolving landscape of the fashion industry. The collaboration with TÜV Rheinland is expected to continue as SHEIN seeks to explore innovative pathways for sustainable development in the future.
