Amelia Kerr Shines with Century in Blaze Victory Over Hearts
A remarkable century from Amelia Kerr propelled the Wellington Blaze to a commanding 49-run victory over the Auckland Hearts in the women’s Super Smash on March 15, 2024. Playing at the Basin Reserve, Kerr not only achieved her first century in senior T20 cricket but also set the stage for her team’s second win in the tournament.
Kerr’s innings of 106 not out came off just 59 balls and featured a powerful display of hitting, including 17 fours and one six. Teaming up with fellow White Fern Georgia Plimmer, the pair established a record opening partnership of 155 runs, significantly contributing to the Blaze’s total of 184 for two.
Plimmer also delivered an impressive performance, scoring 62 runs from 53 balls. The pair’s synergy at the crease showcased their skill and determination, laying a solid foundation for the match. On the bowling front for Auckland, Bree Illing and Amie Hucker each managed to secure a wicket but struggled to contain the scoring rate.
In response, the Auckland Hearts began their chase with intent but faced early setbacks as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Ultimately, they were bowled out for 135 runs in the final over. Captain Maddy Green was the top scorer for Auckland, finishing with 39 runs. The Wellington bowlers excelled, with Xara Jetly claiming three wickets, while Jess Kerr and Nicole Baird each took two wickets, demonstrating a well-rounded team effort.
This victory positions Wellington at the top of the Super Smash table with two wins, while Auckland has recorded one loss and a no-result in their campaign so far. The Blaze’s performance not only reaffirms their status as defending champions but also highlights the emerging talent of Amelia Kerr in women’s cricket.
