Auckland FC Strengthens Attack with Sam Cosgrove Signing
English striker Sam Cosgrove has joined Auckland FC from League One’s Barnsley FC, enhancing the team’s attacking capabilities as they aim to build on their recent success. The 28-year-old forward is expected to contribute significantly to Coach Steve Corica’s strategy, especially after Auckland FC became the fastest team in A-League history to score 50 goals and the first New Zealand team to secure A-League silverware.
During his tenure with Barnsley, Cosgrove netted seven goals and provided six assists in 60 appearances. His professional record includes a total of 70 goals and 20 assists across 297 games, with previous stints at Plymouth Argyle, Aberdeen FC, Shrewsbury Town, and Birmingham City.
Coach Optimistic About New Addition
“Sam is going to be a great acquisition and will provide firepower to the front line,” Corica stated. “He’s a proven goal scorer, and we’re pleased to have secured his signature. He is a big, physical striker who I think will be well-suited to the league. He’s also got a great deal of experience. We’re looking forward to having him as part of the group.”
Cosgrove’s arrival adds depth to Auckland’s attack, joining recent addition Lachlan Brook and players like Logan Rogerson, Guillermo May, Marlee François, Jonty Bidois, Liam Gillion, and in-form Jesse Randall. Corica emphasized the team’s ambition to improve on last year’s performance, stating, “We’re an ambitious group keen to build a squad that includes depth in every position and a team that fights for the right to play each week.”
Cosgrove Adjusts to New Environment
Cosgrove arrived in Auckland over the weekend and has already participated in a few training sessions with his new teammates. “The culture and togetherness are outstanding,” he noted. “Being from overseas, I’m still adjusting, but everyone has been so supportive and friendly.”
Before making the move, Cosgrove conducted extensive research on the club. “What the club has achieved and the way the city has got behind the team made me eager to be a part of it,” he remarked.
Auckland FC is preparing for their upcoming match, departing for Sydney on Thursday ahead of the Australia Cup quarter-final clash against Sydney FC on March 16, 2024. The team’s focus remains on performance and building a strong squad for the challenges ahead.
