Black Ferns and Springboks Set for Historic Rugby Quarterfinal Clash
The highly anticipated quarterfinal match between the Black Ferns of New Zealand and South Africa is set for midnight on Saturday, and it promises to be a historic encounter. With New Zealand’s recent commanding 40-0 victory over Ireland, the Black Ferns are poised and confident, ready to face a South African side that has made significant strides in women’s rugby.
Alana Bremner, a key player for the Black Ferns, expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance against Ireland. Since the appointment of coach Alan Bunting in 2023, the Black Ferns have achieved a record of 15 wins, six losses, and one draw. Bremner described the 40-0 win as their best display under Bunting, stating, “It felt like that performance had been coming for a while. We’ve been building throughout the World Cup.”
The team has focused on improving their carry height and breakdown efficiency, which Bremner highlighted as crucial in unleashing their talented backs. Her relentless effort against Ireland included making pivotal turnovers, showcasing the team’s defensive strength.
The Black Ferns will likely see consistent line-up selections. Bremner and Maia Roos, with 35 tests under her belt, are expected to maintain their starting positions. However, competition remains fierce, particularly for the loose forward spot, where Kaipo Olsen-Baker, named Black Fern of the Year for 2024, must deliver a standout performance after recovering from injury.
The absence of Player of the Match against Ireland, Sylvia Brunt, due to a head injury, presents an opportunity for Theresa Setefano to extend her impressive international record. Meanwhile, Stacey Waaka will celebrate her 30th test match, adding further motivation to the squad.
On the opposing side, South Africa comes off a historic victory against Italy, where they triumphed 29-24. This marked their first win against a top 10 ranked nation, as they qualified for the quarterfinals for the first time in history. Head coach Swys de Bruin expressed his emotional pride in the team, stating, “This is unreal, it is so emotional. The nation is so much behind these girls.”
The South African team has undergone significant development since the last Rugby World Cup, where they failed to secure a win. They have achieved 23 of their 41 all-time international victories since 2022 and have established a centrally contracted national squad. Notably, the Bulls Daisies, a domestic professional team, have contributed to the growing strength of women’s rugby in the country.
Key players like Libbie van Rensburg, who has become a standout performer, will be vital in the upcoming clash. Van Rensburg, who scored a hat trick against Brazil and has been instrumental in South Africa’s rise, stated, “This is massive. We spoke about changing history in South Africa for women’s rugby and we did that.”
The Black Ferns and South Africa have a limited history of competition. Their only previous encounter was during the 2010 Rugby World Cup, where the Black Ferns secured a decisive 55-3 victory. With both teams now at different stages in their development, this quarterfinal promises to be a significant moment in women’s rugby history.
As the match approaches, the excitement builds. Both teams have demonstrated their capabilities and resilience, and fans are eagerly anticipating a thrilling contest that could redefine the landscape of women’s rugby on the world stage.
