Tragedy Strikes Bondi Beach: 12 Dead in Targeted Shooting
At least 12 people have died in a shooting incident at Bondi Beach, Australia, on December 10, 2023, during a gathering marking the first day of Hanukkah. Among the deceased is one of the shooters, while a second shooter is in critical condition and under police custody.
In a press conference, New South Wales (NSW) Premier Chris Minns described the incident as a targeted attack against the Jewish community. “What should have been a night of peace and joy celebrated in that community with families and supporters has been shattered by this horrifying evil attack,” he stated.
As the tragic events unfolded, over 1,000 people were present at the beach for the Hanukkah celebration. In response to the violence, Premier Minns emphasized the need for solidarity, saying, “Our heart bleeds for Australia’s Jewish community tonight. It’s a responsibility of all Australians to wrap their arms around Australia’s Jewish community and help them get through this incredibly difficult period.”
Details of the Incident and Response
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that a total of 29 individuals sustained injuries, including two police officers who are in serious condition. The incident was declared a terrorist act shortly after it occurred, with Commissioner Lanyon emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. He stated, “I declared this to be a terrorist incident at 21:36 this evening.”
The police have initiated a comprehensive response to the attack, with special powers authorized to investigate the possibility of a third offender. Commissioner Lanyon highlighted the rapid response of emergency services, noting, “The ambulance service responded brilliantly,” as they transported victims to multiple hospitals across the city.
Eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media depict chaotic scenes as people fled the area amid gunfire. Witnesses reported seeing individuals on the ground injured while others rushed to provide assistance.
Community and International Reactions
In light of the tragic incident, support has poured in from local and international leaders. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed his shock, stating, “Australia and New Zealand are closer than friends, we’re family. My thoughts, and the thoughts of all New Zealanders, are with those affected.”
Commissioner Lanyon urged the community to remain calm and avoid seeking retribution amidst the ongoing investigation. He reiterated the importance of allowing law enforcement to conduct their duties without interference.
This attack marks a significant moment of grief for Australia’s Jewish community, coinciding with a holiday traditionally celebrated with family and joy. As the investigation continues and the community mourns, the focus remains on healing and support for those affected by this tragic event.
