In a remarkable achievement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA Arab Cup 2025, overcoming defending champions Algeria in a thrilling quarter-final match. Coach Cosmin Olaroiu attributed the team’s success to their strong teamwork and resilience throughout the tournament.

After navigating a challenging group that included Egypt, Jordan, and Kuwait, the UAE secured their place in the knockout stage. They faced a formidable challenge in the quarter-finals, where they managed to equalize against Algeria after trailing 1-0. The match culminated in a dramatic penalty shootout, which the UAE won 7-6.

Resilience on Display

The quarter-final match took place at Al Bayt Stadium in Doha, Qatar, where Algeria initially took the lead through Adil Boulbina in the second half. Despite Algeria’s dominance, the UAE fought back, with Bruno Oliveira scoring to force extra time. Olaroiu praised his players, stating, “Teamwork was key to victory over Algeria. We overcame a strong team with very high-quality players. I thank the players and congratulate them on this qualification.”

The UAE entered the tournament with a heavy heart after a disappointing 3-2 aggregate loss to Iraq in World Cup qualifying, where a last-minute penalty ended their hopes. Reflecting on their recent struggles, Olaroiu noted, “We were unlucky for a long time, but we were fortunate in the penalty shootout against Algeria. They outperformed us in the first half, but in the second half, we were better.”

Looking ahead, Olaroiu is optimistic about the team’s future, stating, “I hope we continue our journey in this tournament. We have qualified, and that is the most important thing.” When asked about the semi-final against Morocco, he expressed confidence in his squad’s abilities, saying, “Why not? We delivered a great performance against Jordan, and now we have shown a good level and proven that we are a strong team.”

Determination and Focus Ahead

The UAE’s next match will be against Morocco, a team Olaroiu described as having a similar style to Algeria. The coach emphasized the need for his players to maintain their momentum as they aim for further success in the tournament.

Hamad Al Meqbaali, the UAE goalkeeper who played a crucial role in the victory by saving two penalties during the shootout, echoed his coach’s sentiments. “We deserved the win after our outstanding performance against defending champions Algeria, and we aim to go far,” he stated confidently.

On the other side, Algeria’s coach Madjid Bougherra expressed disappointment over the early exit, noting, “I feel disappointed after being eliminated in the quarter-finals. We were aiming to make the fans happy, but luck wasn’t on our side.” Bougherra, who previously led Algeria to victory in the 2021 edition of the tournament, now shifts focus to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Algeria is set to face Sudan on December 24, 2025.

The UAE’s unexpected journey in the Arab Cup highlights their potential and determination, setting the stage for an exciting semi-final clash against Morocco as they seek to achieve even greater heights.
