Ten Dead in Mass Shooting at Bondi Beach During Hanukkah Celebration
A mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, has left at least ten people dead, including one of the alleged attackers. The incident occurred on the evening of December 10, 2023, during a gathering to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, causing widespread panic among attendees. According to the New South Wales Police, a second alleged shooter is in critical condition, while a further 11 individuals have sustained injuries, including two police officers.
Witnesses reported hearing up to 50 gunshots as chaos erupted around 18:40 local time. Eyewitness Harry Wilson described the scene, stating, “I saw at least 10 people on the ground and blood everywhere.” Emergency services responded promptly, with patients being transported to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick for treatment.
As the situation unfolded, a bystander displayed remarkable bravery by intervening and wresting a rifle from one of the gunmen, potentially preventing further casualties. Video footage circulating on social media depicted individuals lying on the ground, with bystanders attempting to administer CPR.
Local residents described a scene of terror, as many fled from the beach area. Police officers arrived swiftly, urging the public to avoid the vicinity and take shelter where possible.
Community Response and Official Statements
The shooting has drawn strong reactions from community leaders. Jeremy Leibler, president of the Zionist Federation of Australia, condemned the violence, stating, “This is a day of profound grief. Members of our community have been murdered. Others have been seriously injured. Families are shattered.” He emphasized that an attack on Jews celebrating their faith represents an attack on the core values of Australia.
NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed his dismay at the incident, noting the distressing reports and images emerging from Bondi. He assured the public that police and emergency services are actively responding to the situation. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed awareness of the unfolding “active security situation,” urging those in the area to heed information from NSW Police.
The New Zealand Jewish Council also released a statement expressing horror over the incident, offering support to the affected community. Their statement highlighted the shared grief among families during a time meant for celebration.
As investigations continue, authorities have not yet confirmed the motives behind the shooting. The community remains in shock as they grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event.
The Australian public and international observers await further updates as police work to clarify details surrounding the shooting and the identities of the deceased and injured.
