New Zealand Government Urges Early Passport Renewals to Avoid Delays

More than 1.3 million passports in New Zealand are set to expire within the next two years, prompting the Government to encourage citizens to renew their travel documents now. The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) anticipates a significant increase in passport applications in 2026 as documents issued in 2015 and 2016 approach their ten-year renewal mark. Specifically, around 622,000 passports will expire in 2026, followed by an additional 759,000 in 2027.

Brooke van Velden, the Minister of Internal Affairs, has advised New Zealanders to proactively check their passport expiration dates and renew early to avoid potential processing delays. Speaking to Newstalk ZB, she emphasized the current efficiency of the application process, stating, “It’s only taking three days for passport applications to be processed at the moment.”

Renewing a passport now may prevent complications down the line. Van Velden reiterated the importance of early action: “If your passport expires in 2026, renew now before the rush. Don’t let an expired passport get in the way of your travel.”

Travelers are advised to take careful planning into account, especially during busy seasons. Many countries, including Australia, require passports to have at least six months of validity upon entry. This means that even passports set to expire in a few months could be deemed insufficient by immigration authorities.

The potential influx of applications is a response to previous complaints from travelers, who reported that passport renewals took up to 10 weeks last year. In light of this feedback, the DIA has worked to improve processing times, reducing them from 25 days in 2023 to just three days in 2025. Van Velden stated, “This represents a great improvement in service delivery that will benefit every New Zealand family planning to travel overseas.”

As many individuals applied for ten-year passports when they were first introduced, the Government is preparing for a simultaneous expiration surge. The Minister noted that the DIA has increased staffing levels and has seconded personnel from other departments to manage the anticipated demand effectively.

Currently, the DIA’s passport website advises applicants to allow for 20 days of processing time. The cost for an adult passport is approximately $247, while children’s passports, which require renewal every five years, cost around $144.

New Zealanders are encouraged to utilize the summer period to ensure their travel documents are up to date, preventing any last-minute scrambles as deadlines approach. With proper planning, citizens can avoid the stress of processing delays and ensure a smooth travel experience.
