In a remarkable turn of events, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have secured their place as semi-finalists in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025. Coach Cosmin Olaroiu attributes this unexpected success to the teamwork displayed throughout the tournament. The team advanced from a challenging group that included Egypt, Jordan, and Kuwait, culminating in a thrilling quarter-final victory over defending champions Algeria.

The quarter-final match, held at Al Bayt Stadium, showcased the UAE’s resilience. After falling behind to Algeria due to a goal from Adil Boulbina in the second half, the UAE fought back to equalize through Bruno Oliveira, ultimately leading to a tense penalty shootout, which they won 7-6.

Teamwork Drives Success

Olaroiu expressed his pride in the players after the victory, stating, “Teamwork was key to victory over Algeria. We overcame a strong team with very high-quality players. I thank the players and congratulate them on this qualification.” The coach noted that their journey to the semi-finals was particularly meaningful, as the team had suffered a heartbreaking aggregate loss to Iraq just weeks prior, eliminating them from World Cup qualification.

Reflecting on the match, Olaroiu remarked, “We were unlucky for a long time, but we were fortunate in the penalty shootout against Algeria. They outperformed us in the first half, but in the second half, we were better.” He added that the most important thing was qualifying for the next round.

Looking ahead, Olaroiu confirmed that all focus is now on the upcoming semi-final against Morocco. “Morocco’s style is similar to Algeria’s, and we will try to give our best to go as far as possible in this tournament,” he said.

UAE goalkeeper Hamad Al Meqbaali played a crucial role in the victory, saving two penalties during the shootout and making essential saves in extra time. Al Meqbaali expressed the team’s determination, stating, “We deserved the win after our outstanding performance against defending champions Algeria, and we aim to go far.”

On the other side, Algeria’s coach, Madjid Bougherra, expressed disappointment following the early exit. “I feel disappointed after being eliminated in the quarter-finals. We were aiming to make the fans happy, but luck wasn’t on our side,” he said. Bougherra led Algeria to victory in the previous tournament edition, and the team will now shift its focus to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they will compete against Burkina Faso, Sudan, and Equatorial Guinea, starting with a match against Sudan on December 24, 2025.

As the UAE prepares for their semi-final clash, the team’s recent performance has ignited hope and excitement among their supporters, setting the stage for a thrilling continuation in the FIFA Arab Cup. The resilience and determination shown thus far have established the UAE as a formidable contender in this prestigious tournament.
