Central Stags Triumph Over Canterbury; Ajaz Patel Reaches 400 Wickets
The Central Stags achieved a significant victory against Canterbury in their Plunket Shield match held in Napier, with a strong all-round performance underscored by personal milestones and Canterbury’s batting failures. This match not only secured an outright win for the Stags but also marked a historic moment for bowler Ajaz Patel, who claimed his 400th first-class wicket.
Canterbury’s struggles were apparent throughout the match, particularly during two critical sessions. On day two, they suffered a dramatic collapse, losing seven wickets in a single session, followed by a further six wickets on day three. By the final morning, the Stags needed just two more wickets for victory, with wicketkeeper-captain Dane Cleaver tallying nine dismissals for the match, including his 300th first-class dismissal.
Taking over the captaincy from Tom Bruce, Cleaver opted to bat first after winning the toss. Canterbury’s troubles began even before the match commenced, as travel disruptions forced the team to bus from Wellington to Napier, arriving late the night before. The situation worsened mid-match when keeper-batter Mitch Hay and bowler Michael Rae were called up to the BLACKCAPS Test squad due to injuries, resulting in the reshuffling of their playing XI.
Despite posting a modest 239 runs in their first innings, the Stags benefitted significantly from Curtis Heaphy, who scored his third consecutive first-class century. Brad Schmulian contributed 39 runs, forming a 61-run partnership that bolstered the Stags’ position. Meanwhile, bowler Josh Clarkson excelled, achieving career-best figures of 4/33 as Canterbury was bowled out for a mere 124 on day two.
In their second innings, Central Stags showcased a balanced batting performance. Rookie Taylor Bettelheim notched his second half-century in just his second match, partnering with Schmulian for a 97-run stand. Will Clark added an aggressive 70 runs from the number eight position, pushing Central to a total of 330 and setting Canterbury a daunting target of 445 runs.
Canterbury’s hopes of a competitive chase were swiftly extinguished as Ajaz Patel made history by claiming his 400th first-class wicket. The visitors’ middle and lower order crumbled under pressure, and by the end of day three, they were left with only 127 runs on the board, having lost eight wickets. The final morning provided little resistance; after Fraser Sheat was dismissed for 20 runs, Jesse Frew managed a top score of 30, sealing a comprehensive victory for the Central Stags before lunch.
This win propels the Stags to the interim top position in the Plunket Shield table, heightening the competition as only one round remains before the Super Smash window. Looking ahead, the Central Stags will travel to Dunedin to face Otago, while Canterbury will return home to host the Auckland Aces in another crucial match.
