Northern Districts Women Claim Historic Title with 67-Run Win
The Northern Districts women’s cricket team has achieved a significant milestone by winning their first title in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, defeating the Wellington Blaze by 67 runs at the Cello Basin Reserve in Wellington on October 7, 2023. This victory marks a historic moment for the team, which has been part of the women’s domestic scene since the 1999-2000 season.
Captain Jess Watkin described the triumph as “pretty surreal,” reflecting the emotional weight of the victory after years of striving for success. Northern Districts posted a total of 182 runs before being bowled out in 44.4 overs, with Holly Topp scoring 39 runs off 61 balls. The Blaze, in response, managed only 115 runs in 41.1 overs, succumbing to the pressure exerted by the Northern Districts bowlers.
This championship is particularly significant given that Northern Districts had not previously reached the finals in the 19 editions of the T20 competition. Their last appearance in a 50-over final was in 2020, where they lost to Auckland by the same margin they secured victory this time around.
Under the guidance of coach Peter Borren, in his third season, and newly appointed performance coach Luke Pomfret, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience. Despite finishing last in the previous three seasons, they showcased their development and tenacity throughout the tournament.
After winning the toss, Northern Districts opted to bat but faced early challenges. Their first seven partnerships managed only 24 runs, leaving them at a precarious 94-7. However, Topp and Marama Downes, who contributed 25 runs, helped lift the team to a total that proved sufficient.
The Blaze’s innings began poorly, with Downes taking three wickets for just 26 runs in ten overs. The Northern Districts bowlers, including Kayley Knight and Jess Kerr, effectively dismantled the Blaze’s batting lineup, leading to a collapse at 33-4. The Blaze’s top scorer, Isla McKenzie, managed only 32 runs, highlighting the dominance of Northern Districts in the field.
Downes, reflecting on the victory, emphasized the hard work put in by the team over the past seasons and how belief in their abilities played a crucial role in their success. “It’s incredibly special to be a part of this,” she said, noting the positive environment within the team, which has contributed to their recent achievements.
As Northern Districts celebrates this historic victory, the team’s future looks promising, with a strong foundation built on teamwork, resilience, and dedication. The win not only adds a new name to the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield but also inspires the next generation of cricketers within the association.
