NZ Warriors Aim to Send Mitch Barnett Off with a Win in 2026
The New Zealand Warriors are preparing for a significant farewell as veteran forward Mitch Barnett announces he will leave the club at the end of the 2026 NRL season due to personal reasons involving his child’s medical needs. The decision marks a poignant chapter for the Warriors as they look to send Barnett off on a high note, reflecting on his impact since joining the team.
Young Warriors forward Jacob Laban recalls how Barnett set the tone for the team. “From the start, when he first came over, he set the expectation,” Laban told RNZ. Barnett, who had previously played 128 first-grade games for the Canberra Raiders and Newcastle Knights, emphasized the importance of fitness and discipline, a stark contrast to the club’s struggles during previous seasons.
Barnett’s arrival in 2022 came during a tumultuous time for the Warriors, who were facing their worst-ever NRL campaign. Despite starting with a six-game suspension for an on-field incident, Barnett helped guide the team close to a grand final appearance in his first season. His leadership and experience have played a crucial role in developing the club’s young talent.
As the Warriors gear up for the upcoming season, coach Andrew Webster has praised the team’s off-season commitment to fitness. “Over the Christmas break, they made a pact to return fit and hit their targets,” Webster stated, noting that every player has met those expectations. This year, Barnett’s influence has been evident as the squad prepares to face the Sydney Roosters and Canberra Raiders in their opening matches.
Barnett’s departure comes with heartfelt support from the club. “I had to put my family first, and they know the details of the situation,” he explained. “They have been very supportive, but it hasn’t made the decision any easier.” As he closes in on his final games, the Warriors are determined to ensure his legacy is felt throughout the club.
The impact of Barnett’s mentorship is particularly notable among younger players. Tanner Stowers-Smith, a 21-year-old front-rower, expressed admiration for Barnett’s guidance. “He’s one of the players I model my game on,” Stowers-Smith said. “He shares all he knows—all the tricks around the game.” Stowers-Smith’s own development has been significant; after making his debut last season, he extended his contract through 2028.
Barnett’s influence extends beyond his immediate contributions on the field. He has helped shape a generation of forwards, including Laban, Leka Halasima, and Demitric Vaimauga, who have all earned long-term contracts with the club. The transition of leadership will be crucial for the Warriors as they look to build on their recent successes.
As Barnett prepares for a challenging examination in Sydney to confirm his return from injury, the team’s morale remains high. The excitement surrounding his potential 50th game for the Warriors adds to the anticipation. “If that doesn’t give you any more motivation to win a premiership, I don’t know what will,” Laban emphasized, reflecting the team’s commitment to honouring Barnett’s contributions.
With the season ahead, the Warriors are focused on delivering a strong performance that will not only celebrate Barnett’s career but also solidify their standing in the NRL. The stakes are high, and the team is united in their goal to send their co-captain off as a winner, highlighting the true spirit of camaraderie and dedication within the club.
