Pledger Out for Season with Ruptured ACL, Highlanders Adjust Plans
Emerging rugby star Pledger faces a lengthy absence from the field after suffering a complete rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a training session. The injury will sideline him for up to 12 months, resulting in his withdrawal from both the Highlanders and Otago squads for the current season.
This setback is particularly disheartening for fans of Super Rugby who had high hopes for the talented halfback. At just 20 years old, Pledger has made a significant impact in the sport, previously showcasing his abilities through standout performances with the New Zealand under-20 team and a breakthrough campaign with Otago in the National Provincial Championship (NPC). Many viewed him as a potential candidate for the All Blacks, further fueling expectations for his upcoming debut in Super Rugby.
Reflecting on his injury, Pledger expressed his disappointment, stating, “Incredibly disappointing to get a season-ending injury, as I was very excited about my first full season as a professional. I guess I have learned early that part of being a professional rugby player is dealing with injury.” He aims to focus on his rehabilitation to ensure he returns in peak condition, adding that he will also have more time to dedicate to his studies.
Despite losing Pledger, the Highlanders have some depth at the halfback position. Folau Fakatava, a two-test All Black, is poised to step into a more prominent role. Although sometimes overlooked, Fakatava brings valuable experience and skill to the team. Additionally, Adam Lennox, a promising utility player from Taranaki, is set to support the squad, while Nic Shearer from Southland may also be called upon as a third option.
The Highlanders will need to adapt quickly to the loss of one of their most exciting talents. With the season underway, they will rely on their remaining players to maintain competitiveness in a challenging Super Rugby environment. Pledger’s journey to recovery will be closely monitored, as fans and teammates alike look forward to his eventual return to the pitch.
