Record Crowd Anticipated for Kiwis vs Tonga at Eden Park
The upcoming clash between the Kiwis and Tonga at Eden Park is poised to attract a record crowd, as the Pacific Championships continue to gain momentum. Kiwis coach Stacey Jones expressed optimism that this tournament could serve as a pivotal moment for international rugby league, potentially paving the way for a second New Zealand team in the NRL.
Despite limited promotion and the teams having not played for nearly a year, the Pacific Championships have captured the attention of fans. The match scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2023, will be preceded by a highly anticipated test between the Kiwi Ferns and the Jillaroos. According to reports from the Herald, attendance is expected to exceed 38,000, marking the largest crowd for a Kiwis match on New Zealand soil since 2010. This figure also represents the highest turnout for any league match in the country in over a decade.
The excitement surrounding the tournament follows a notable turnout of nearly 45,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium for the Samoa-Tonga test last weekend. Additionally, the opening week of the Pacific Championships saw a strong attendance of 21,000 at Go Media Stadium, where the Kiwis faced Samoa in an exhilarating encounter.
The growing interest in international rugby league is particularly significant this year, as the Australian Kangaroos are currently touring England, creating a unique opportunity for other teams to shine. The absence of one of the sport’s dominant teams has allowed the Kiwis and Tonga to take center stage, with both teams eager to make a statement.
Stacey Jones emphasized that the success of the Pacific Championships could be crucial in enhancing the profile of international rugby league. He stated that the enthusiasm from fans and the large crowds indicate a shifting landscape for the sport.
As the Kiwis prepare to face Tonga, the anticipation builds not only for the match but also for what this could mean for the future of rugby league in New Zealand and beyond. With record-breaking crowds and high-energy matches, the Pacific Championships are positioning themselves as a major force in the international rugby league scene.
