The Southern Hoiho delivered a commanding performance against their South Island rivals, the Mainland Pouakai, securing a decisive victory of 102-66 in Dunedin on March 15, 2024. This win marks a significant turnaround for the Hoiho, who had previously suffered a 121-83 defeat to the Pouakai in their season opener last month.
The Hoiho showcased a well-rounded team effort, with five players finishing in double figures. Jessie Edwards led the charge with 19 points, complemented by nine rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Claire Jacobs also contributed significantly, matching Edwards’ score with 19 points alongside four rebounds and four assists. Taylah Simmons added 15 points, while Bec Pizzey and Lil Dart chipped in with 12 points and 17 points, respectively.
The Hoiho’s defense proved formidable, limiting the Pouakai’s scoring opportunities. Only two players, Esra McGoldrick and Morgan Yaeger, managed to reach double figures for the Pouakai, with 16 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Hoiho established their dominance early in the game. They led 24-15 at the end of the first quarter, with strong plays from Edwards and others paving the way for a solid start. Edwards’s defensive prowess was on full display as she executed a critical block against a fast break initiated by McKenna Dale.
As the game progressed, Hoiho players demonstrated excellent ball movement and teamwork. They extended their lead to 51-32 at halftime, with Jacobs sinking crucial three-pointers to keep the momentum in their favor. The team displayed resilience and cohesion, effectively countering the Pouakai’s attempts to regain control.
Coming out of halftime, the Pouakai sought to close the gap; however, the Hoiho remained unyielding. Jacobs continued her scoring spree, hitting a deep three-pointer, while Bradley and Edwards contributed with lay-ups and blocks. By the end of the third quarter, the Hoiho had firmly established a commanding lead of 79-45, limiting the Pouakai to just 13 points during that period.
In the final quarter, Dart’s three-pointer capped an impressive performance, sealing the Hoiho’s victory at 102-66. The Hoiho’s ability to adapt and execute under pressure was a standout feature of the match, showcasing their potential as strong contenders in the league.
The final scores reflected the Hoiho’s dominance: Southern Hoiho 102 (Jessie Edwards 19, Claire Jacobs 19) defeated Mainland Pouakai 66 (Esra McGoldrick 16, Morgan Yaeger 10). Quarter scores were 24-15, 51-32, and 79-45. This performance will surely serve as a confidence booster for the Hoiho as they continue their season.
