Courier Union Challenges Freightways Over Health and Safety Issues
The ProDrive courier union has initiated a campaign against Freightways, citing alleged health and safety violations. In response, Freightways has rejected these claims, asserting its openness to discussions with contractors regarding any issues.
Freightways, a publicly listed company on the New Zealand Stock Exchange, operates several brands including New Zealand Couriers, Post Haste Couriers, and DX Mail. The company relies heavily on independent contractors to manage its delivery operations.
On October 28, 2023, a collective of 126 independent contractors, representing approximately 10% of Freightways’ total workforce, decided to withdraw their services. This decision was made under the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act, as the contractors cannot legally strike. The withdrawal prompted Freightways to implement contingency plans to ensure continued delivery services.
The union’s concerns center on what they describe as consistent breaches of health and safety regulations, which they argue jeopardize the well-being of workers. ProDrive is contemplating legal action against Freightways, seeking to address these alleged violations through formal channels.
Freightways has responded by emphasizing its commitment to health and safety, inviting dialogue with the affected contractors. The company maintains that it values the contributions of its independent contractors and is dedicated to resolving any disputes amicably.
As the situation develops, both ProDrive and Freightways remain at a crossroads, with the potential for legal proceedings hanging in the balance. The outcome of this dispute could have wider implications for the courier industry in New Zealand, particularly regarding the treatment and rights of independent contractors.
In the coming weeks, stakeholders will be closely monitoring how this conflict unfolds, as it may influence future relationships between courier companies and their independent workforce. The impact of these developments will likely resonate beyond the immediate parties involved, shaping discussions around labor rights and safety standards in the industry.
