Balclutha Residents Urged to Conserve Water Amid Emergency
Southland continues to grapple with the aftermath of severe storms that struck the region ten days ago, leading to a state of emergency that will remain in effect until November 7, 2023. The storms caused extensive damage, leaving approximately 1,290 properties in Southland and 1,100 properties in Otago without power. According to PowerNet, restoration efforts are ongoing but complicated due to the widespread impact of the storm.
Emergency Management Southland has noted that while power restoration is progressing, there may be instances where previously restored areas need to be temporarily shut off to ensure safety during repair operations. The public is advised to remain patient as crews work diligently to restore power.
Public Spaces Closed for Safety Inspections
In the wake of the storm, many parks, reserves, and playgrounds in Invercargill, Bluff, and the broader Southland District have closed until they can be thoroughly inspected for safety. Local authorities have expressed significant concern regarding individuals entering these closed areas, emphasizing the importance of public safety during this period of recovery.
In the Clutha district, particularly in Balclutha, residents are being urged to conserve water due to disruptions at the local water treatment plant. The Clutha District Council has reported mechanical issues with a valve that have impacted water processing. Operators are currently onsite addressing the problem.
As of now, the water reservoir in Balclutha is at 60% capacity, prompting officials to issue a conservation notice. Residents are advised to monitor their water usage and avoid activities that demand significant water resources, such as washing vehicles. This precautionary measure will allow the reservoir time to recover once repairs are completed.
Authorities continue to provide updates as the situation evolves, urging the community to cooperate with conservation efforts. The residents of Balclutha and surrounding areas are thanked for their understanding and support during this challenging time as the region works toward recovery and restoration.
