New data from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) reveals that New Zealand has experienced an exceptionally wet and sun-deprived January, leading to concerns that the country has been “robbed of summer.” This January has seen most regions receive less than 85% of their typical sunshine, while rainfall totals have significantly exceeded normal amounts.

The report highlights that areas such as Auckland, Coromandel, Tauranga, and the East Cape have recorded rainfall levels up to four times higher than usual. In contrast, Canterbury and Marlborough have experienced totals that are two to three times above their average for this time of year. NIWA described the situation as “exceptionally wet,” painting a grim picture for many residents and businesses hoping for summer weather.

Severe Weather Impacts

The dire weather conditions have contributed to serious consequences across the country. This week, heavy rainfall has led to fatal landslides in the Bay of Plenty, further emphasizing the risks associated with the current weather pattern. The ongoing downpours have disrupted daily life, with the peak of summer typically marked by warmth and sunshine now overshadowed by persistent rain and instability.

Despite the challenging conditions, the MetService has indicated that brighter weather may be on the horizon. Forecasts suggest that New Zealand could soon experience a shift in conditions, potentially alleviating some of the dampness that has characterized the month.

As New Zealanders continue to navigate this unusual weather, the impact on agriculture, tourism, and general outdoor activities remains a concern. Many are left wondering how this wet January will affect the summer season moving forward. With expectations of improvement, there is cautious optimism that the sun may return soon, allowing residents to reclaim their summer experiences.
