Teenager Assaulted for Shoes in Auckland CBD Incident
A 13-year-old boy was assaulted and threatened with a knife outside the Britomart McDonald’s in Auckland’s central business district on March 10, 2024. The incident unfolded when the boy, along with friends, was approached by a group of six older youths demanding his $250 Nike TN shoes. When he refused to comply, one of the attackers allegedly punched him in the face and warned, “Give me your shoes or I’ll stab you.”
The frightened teenager surrendered his shoes and fled into nearby stores, pleading with staff for a place to hide. He ultimately sought safety inside an Adidas store, where security personnel intervened. His father, Kurt, shared with the media how his son had gone out “like any typical boys their age,” only to have his day turn traumatic.
“We received a call around 15:00. My son was crying and said, ‘Dad, some guys have stolen my shoes,’” Kurt recounted. He expressed his disbelief that such violence could occur in broad daylight, stating, “He’s only 13. This shouldn’t happen in broad daylight.”
Kurt and his wife rushed to the city to find their son, who, while unharmed, was emotionally shaken by the experience. One of the most troubling aspects for Kurt was the lack of intervention from bystanders during the assault.
According to the New Zealand Police, they received reports of an assault and robbery at approximately 15:40 on the same day and are currently investigating the incident. This attack has raised alarms, particularly as it follows another violent episode just five days prior, where a 13-year-old girl was assaulted inside the same McDonald’s.
The recent surge in youth violence in Auckland’s CBD has sparked concerns among parents and community members. Kurt has called on local authorities to increase police presence in the area. “A 13-year-old being robbed in broad daylight—what is happening to our city?” he asked, highlighting the need for action in light of these alarming incidents.
The family, originally from Sydney and living in New Zealand for six years, expressed that this frightening event has shattered their sense of security. The community’s reaction underscores a growing unease regarding safety in public spaces, particularly for young people. As investigations continue, the hope is for swift action to address these concerns and restore a feeling of safety in Auckland’s streets.
