Vern Cotter Exits All Blacks Coaching Race, Joins Reds
The race for the All Blacks coaching position has narrowed as Vern Cotter, head coach of the Blues, confirmed he will leave for the Reds at the conclusion of the Super Rugby Pacific season. Cotter’s announcement comes as a significant development, following his intentions to help foster a winning culture at the Blues since joining the club.
In a statement, Cotter expressed confidence in the future of the Blues, stating, “The landscape has changed significantly since I came in, and it genuinely feels like the club is well set up for its next phase of evolution.” He emphasized that his time with the Blues has been productive, citing numerous “mature, honest conversations” that have shaped the club’s direction.
Karl Budge, the Blues chief executive, commented on the decision to announce Cotter’s departure ahead of the season. Budge noted, “This has been part of a long-term strategy, and both Vern and the club felt it was the right thing to be open and clear before the season begins.” He expressed gratitude for Cotter’s contributions, highlighting the strong performance environment established under his leadership.
Cotter’s departure marks a notable moment in the search for the All Blacks’ next head coach. He is the second prominent figure to remove himself from contention, following Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies coach. This shift in coaching personnel has implications for the All Blacks as they look to secure a new leader ahead of upcoming international competitions.
Despite the impending transition, Budge reassured fans and players that Cotter remains fully committed to the Blues for the duration of the season. “Vern is 100 percent focused on the job at hand,” Budge affirmed. “He is deeply invested in this playing group and this organisation.”
Looking ahead, the Blues have initiated the process of selecting a new head coach, with further announcements expected in the coming weeks. As the club prepares for the 2026 season, Cotter remains dedicated to ensuring the team performs at its highest level, leaving a solid foundation for his successor.
In summary, Cotter’s decision to join the Reds reflects a strategic move for both himself and the Blues, as the team plans for future success while the All Blacks continue their search for a new coach.
