Auckland mayoral candidate Kerrin Leoni withdrew from a scheduled debate at the Herald on March 15, 2024, just minutes before it was set to begin. The announcement came via an email from her campaign manager, Sharon Jensen, who did not provide a reason at that time. Later, Jensen clarified that Leoni chose to prioritize preparations for a significant “Get Out the Vote” event planned for Aotea Square the following day.

Leoni’s decision to abstain from the debate contrasts sharply with her earlier commitment. Jensen had accepted the debate invitation on March 13, confirming it later the same day with a “Locked in” message. A further confirmation was sent on March 14, underscoring Leoni’s initial intent to participate.

The debate proceeded without her, featuring two other candidates: independent candidate Eric Chuah and Rob McNeil from the Animal Justice Party. This debate offered voters a chance to hear differing perspectives on key issues affecting Auckland’s future.

Throughout her campaign, Leoni has been vocal in her criticism of current Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown, who has declined multiple invitations to engage in candidate debates. This absence of direct confrontation between candidates has raised concerns about transparency and voter engagement among the electorate.

As the mayoral race intensifies, Leoni’s focus on mobilizing voters could be a strategic move to enhance her visibility and support. The outcome of the Aotea Square event may significantly influence public perception and voter turnout in the upcoming election.
