Wellington’s Te Matapihi Gallery Unveils Community-Driven Art Exhibit

A new exhibition titled Rau Whārangi – Leaves of Pōneke has opened at Te Huarewa Toi, a gallery within the recently reopened Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, the Wellington Central Library. The exhibition features the collaborative efforts of over 1,000 Wellington residents and is set to run until June 14, 2024. Artist and science communicator Dr. Gabby O’Connor spearheaded the project, aiming to engage the community in exploring the ecological history of the region.

Dr. O’Connor, who has dedicated her work to connecting art with science, expressed her surprise at the depth of the ecological history she uncovered during her research. She learned that Aotearoa was once predominantly covered by forests, with lush coastal greenery meeting the sea in Wellington. The extensive deforestation that has since occurred, leaving only fragments of the original landscape, adds a layer of urgency to the exhibition’s themes.

Working with a large group of participants alters the dynamic of art creation significantly. Dr. O’Connor emphasized that the workshops held prior to the gallery’s reopening fostered excitement among residents of all ages. This collaborative approach not only cultivated a connection to the library itself but also encouraged participants to celebrate their contributions. The experience emphasized joy and creativity while educating participants about the natural world, or te taiao.

The involvement of mana whenua and scientists was pivotal in shaping the exhibition’s direction. Dr. O’Connor acknowledged her lack of expertise in local flora, having been born in Australia and raised among different types of trees. She stressed the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge into the project, which guided decisions on the plants and stories represented in the exhibition.

Inclusivity was a core principle in designing the workshops. Dr. O’Connor aimed to dismantle barriers that prevent people from engaging in the arts. Many individuals develop a belief about their artistic abilities at a young age, often labeling themselves as either “good” or “bad” at art. By creating an environment where everyone could find joy in the creative process, she hoped to shift perspectives and encourage exploration without the pressure of traditional artistic skills.

The exhibition features a striking collage that spans two walls, accompanied by a digital slideshow showcasing each participant’s artwork. Dr. O’Connor hopes visitors will feel a sense of pride and excitement as they identify their contributions among the displayed works. The sheer volume and diversity of responses from the community promise to create an engaging experience for attendees.

In a light-hearted moment, Dr. O’Connor shared a personal anecdote, revealing that she once attempted to join the circus at the age of 18. Although that endeavor did not succeed, her journey led her to art school, ultimately shaping her current path as an artist and educator.

The exhibition at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration, inviting Wellingtonians to reconnect with their ecological heritage while celebrating the creativity that resides within their community.
