Community Meal Service Seeks Volunteers for Growing Demand
The monthly lunch program organized by Reach Church in Oamaru is gaining popularity, prompting a call for additional volunteers to maintain its success. Claire Glass, the coordinator for the service, indicated that as participation increases, the need for help has become more urgent.
According to Glass, the program requires volunteers for various roles, with a commitment of just one shift per month. She specifically highlighted the need for assistance during the morning teas, which take place every second and fourth Friday from March to December. “A few hours a month will make a huge difference to our dedicated volunteer leaders, Sandra Tonkin and Karen Fraser,” she emphasized.
The monthly community lunch, known as SoS (Service of Support), runs on the first Thursday of each month from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Glass, who previously managed the Oamaru Farmer’s Market, leads the SoS initiative, viewing it as a unique opportunity for individuals to “give back and feel fantastic.”
“This is a voluntary and non-profit service aimed at creating a social space in a warm, welcoming environment,” Glass added. The initiative is rooted in the church’s mission to foster community spirit, as echoed by Pastor Brendon Perumal. He described the program as an essential aspect of the church’s outreach, stating, “It’s for the community. That’s our heart. To reach out to community and to bring people together.”
Perumal pointed out that especially during challenging times, when many individuals feel isolated, the program is vital for connecting people, particularly the elderly and those in need.
To support this initiative, volunteers are sought for three key roles: a van driver to transport elderly participants, kitchen hands to assist with meal preparation and service, and helpers for cleanup duties.
For anyone interested in volunteering or seeking more information, Reach Church can be contacted at (03) 437-2666. The community’s involvement is crucial to sustaining this service, ensuring that the spirit of togetherness continues to thrive in Oamaru.
