Tragic Collision on Lindis Pass Claims One Life, Witnesses Assist
A serious collision on Lindis Pass-Tarras Road in Central Otago resulted in one fatality on October 11, 2023. Emergency services received reports of the crash at approximately 12:20 PM after a car and a van collided. The incident occurred near the intersection with Omarama-Lindis Pass Road, leading to a swift response from local fire and medical teams.
Witnesses to the tragic event, including two friends, described their harrowing experience as they rushed to assist those involved. Becky Dennison and her companion were driving behind the two vehicles when the crash unfolded right before their eyes. They immediately reacted by trying to help the victims and sought out fire extinguishers to combat the flames that erupted from the wreckage.
The situation was chaotic as smoke and fire quickly spread from the damaged vehicles. Dennison recounted the moment, stating, “It all happened so fast; we just connected with one of the vehicles and knew we had to do something.”
Emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after the incident, but, tragically, one individual was pronounced dead at the site of the crash. The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially released, pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Local police have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving in the area, especially given the challenging road conditions often present in Central Otago.
This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers present on rural roads. The community is now coming together to support the victims’ families and reflect on the need for road safety awareness.
As investigations continue, further updates will be provided, including information on the deceased and any potential charges related to the incident.
