The Cook Islands Moana launched their 2023 Pacific Championships Bowl campaign with a commanding 34-6 victory over the Papua New Guinea Orchids in Port Moresby on October 19, 2023. Under the leadership of veteran captain and fullback Kiana Takairangi, the Moana team showcased a powerful performance, scoring seven tries compared to just one from their opponents.

Winger Paulina Morris-Ponga was a standout player, securing a hat-trick and contributing 12 points to the scoreline. Playmaker Chantay Kiria-Ratu also impressed, tallying another 12 points while orchestrating the team’s attacks with her skillful kicking and ability to evade defenders.

The previous encounter between these two teams saw the Orchids narrowly defeat the Cook Islands 28-20 in 2023. This time, however, the Moana side turned the tables, marking their second test victory over the Orchids and positioning themselves strongly in the Bowl chase.

In the opening minutes, Emily Veivers put the Moana on the board with a try beneath the posts, converting to give her team a 6-0 lead just seven minutes in. Morris-Ponga quickly followed with her first try in the 11th minute, running wide and then back towards the posts, leveling the score at 6-6 after a successful conversion.

Kiria-Ratu then demonstrated her playmaking abilities, slicing through the defense to score in the 16th minute, followed by another try from Morris-Ponga in the 21st minute. By half-time, the Cook Islands led 20-6, having taken advantage of the sweltering conditions at the Santos National Football Stadium, which reached around 31 degrees Celsius.

Despite a brief scoring moment in the first half, the Orchids struggled to find their rhythm, while the Cook Islands played fluidly. The second half saw Memory Paitai, making her debut, increase the lead to 24-6 with a try just after the break.

As fatigue set in for both teams, the Cook Islands continued to dominate. Kerehitina Matua powered over the line in the 59th minute, adding to the score at 30-6 after another successful conversion from Kiria-Ratu. Morris-Ponga rounded off the scoring with her third try, securing a decisive victory.

Match statistics highlighted the Cook Islands’ dominance, with 58 percent possession and a completion rate of 78 percent. They executed 189 passes compared to the Orchids’ 125.

Looking ahead, the Cook Islands will face Tonga XIII in the second round of the Pacific Bowl next Saturday. Meanwhile, the Fetu Samoa team is set to meet New Zealand in Auckland on the afternoon of October 26, 2023, in the first women’s clash of the Pacific Cup competition.
