Howickians Celebrate 36th Reunion with Laughter and Memories
Residents and former inhabitants of Howick and surrounding suburbs came together for a memorable reunion at the Pakuranga Bowling Club on October 5, 2023. This gathering marked the 36th annual Howickians Reunion, fostering an atmosphere filled with conversation, laughter, and nostalgia.
Gay Bevan, the reunion convener, welcomed attendees, acknowledging both past and present individuals who contributed to the event’s success. A moment of silence was observed to remember those who had passed, reinforcing the bonds of community and history among the participants.
The tables overflowed with delicious homemade treats brought by attendees, creating a warm and inviting environment. Participants enjoyed refreshments while sharing whimsical memories and engaging in light-hearted storytelling. The venue was alive with chatter as old friends rekindled connections and new friendships formed.
Celebrating Community and History
Displays featuring photographs and stories from the past highlighted the rich history of Howick and its surrounding areas. Attendees reminisced about their school days, local events, and significant changes in the community over the years. One particularly amusing anecdote shared involved a Howickian’s grandfather and a botched bread delivery, showcasing the blend of humour and nostalgia that characterized the day.
In an effort to deepen the connections established during the reunion, attendees were invited to share personal reflections on their experiences growing up in the area. Many participants took to the microphone to recount their cherished memories, contributing to a growing archive of stories that encapsulate the spirit of the community.
The next Howickians Reunion is scheduled for the first Sunday of October 2026, and new members are encouraged to join the gathering, promising an even richer tapestry of stories and connections in the future.
