Howick Coastguard President Blair Telfer Advocates for Safety at Sea
Blair Telfer, president of Howick Coastguard, emphasizes the importance of community involvement and maritime safety as summer approaches in New Zealand. His commitment to the voluntary organization reflects a deep-rooted passion for the water and a desire to give back to the local area.
Born and raised in Takapuna, Telfer developed an affinity for the sea during his childhood. He fondly recalls weekends spent fishing in the Waitematā Harbour with his family. His early experiences on the water fostered a lasting appreciation for New Zealand’s maritime culture and yacht racing.
After completing his primary and secondary education at Takapuna Primary, Westlake Boys High School, and later earning a bachelor of engineering degree from Auckland University, Telfer established a career as a civil engineer. Currently, he works for Mott MacDonald, specializing in 3Waters network design and trenchless technology. His professional background complements his volunteer work, where he has served in various roles within Howick Coastguard since joining in 2016.
Community Involvement
Telfer’s journey with Howick Coastguard began during a recruitment drive. His proximity to the organization and his love for water-based activities made it a natural fit. Over the years, he has progressed from a new member to president, taking on roles such as skipper, instructor, and executive member.
With the boating season approaching, Telfer and Howick Coastguard are actively promoting safety messages. They highlight three essential rules: always wear a life jacket, have two waterproof means of communication, and check marine weather forecasts. In 2024, New Zealand recorded 72 drownings, with a staggering 94 percent of victims not wearing life jackets. Telfer points out that many drownings occurred close to shore on sunny days. He emphasizes a proactive approach to safety, asserting that it is preferable to educate the community rather than respond to emergencies.
Howick Coastguard, noted for its dedication, has a proud history of 70 years, with approximately 50 volunteers contributing significantly to the organization. Telfer describes the camaraderie among members as a vital component of their mission, which is centered around “Saving Lives at Sea.” Volunteers engage in various activities, from on-water operations to fundraising and community events, ensuring the unit remains “rescue ready.”
Support from the Community
The Howick community has consistently supported the Coastguard, which has its roots in a tragic event from June 15, 1956, when three local young men drowned. Telfer highlights the importance of local involvement, noting that all unit members are required to be from the area. This connection fosters a strong relationship between the Coastguard and local residents, who contribute through funding and participation in fundraising initiatives.
The Coastguard actively engages in community events, such as the Howick Village HOP and Anzac Day parades, further solidifying their role in the local landscape. Telfer expresses gratitude for the ongoing support, stating, “We would not be nearly as effective without this support and funding.” He hopes to continue giving back to the community that has embraced the organization for decades.
During his downtime, Telfer enjoys exploring east Auckland, particularly the scenic islands of the Waitematā Harbour and Hauraki Gulf. He appreciates the opportunities for outdoor activities, including dog walking along the beaches and discovering hidden nature trails. Local cafes also serve as his preferred spots to unwind and enjoy the vibrant surroundings.
Reflecting on broader societal issues, Telfer advocates for a shift towards stewardship for future generations. He believes that considering the long-term consequences of our actions can lead to more sustainable decision-making.
As Howick Coastguard prepares for another busy season, Telfer remains committed to fostering a culture of safety, community involvement, and resilience within the organization, ensuring that it continues to thrive for many years to come.
