Auckland FC Aims for More Goals as May Seeks Scoring Form

Auckland FC forward Guillermo May is determined to improve his scoring record as the team prepares for the fifth round of the A-League. Although he has not yet found the net this season, May is optimistic that Auckland will surpass their goal tally from last season, when they became the fastest club in the league’s history to reach 50 goals.

In the corresponding round last season, May, who was Auckland’s top scorer with nine goals, made a significant contribution by netting his first goal. His scoring frequency, averaging once every couple of games, has not translated into success this season, where he has yet to score in three starts and one substitute appearance. Despite this, he remains confident and stated, “If the team wins and I don’t score, I prefer to be on a winning team than be the scoring man.”

Optimism for Increased Goal Scoring

May believes the team’s recent additions, including Sam Cosgrove and Lachlan Brook, will enhance their offensive capabilities. “We are playing with the ball better than last season, and that is helping us create better chances,” he explained. The Uruguayan forward is convinced that the team’s improved performance will lead to more goals this year.

The level of competition across the league has intensified, according to May, with more teams vying for a top-six playoff spot. Currently sitting at the top of the A-League table, a position they held for much of the previous season, he emphasizes the need for Auckland to maintain their focus. “It’s been a good start for us because the four teams we’ve faced are going to be competitive,” he noted. “I’m confident in our team, in our competition, and how we are training.”

Personal Challenges and Team Goals

On a personal note, May is recovering from an injury, which has affected his consistency. He remarked, “Sometimes I feel good, but others not so much. I’m getting back to the pace, the rhythm, the fitness.” He sets high expectations for himself, focusing on contributing to the team’s success by facilitating goal-scoring opportunities rather than solely focusing on personal statistics.

“I push every day to be better, and I want to upgrade my stats. I want to be at the top of every scoresheet. I’m going to be better, I’m trying to be,” he asserted. May will have another opportunity to score when Auckland FC hosts fourth-placed Brisbane Roar on March 15, 2024.
