New Plymouth Courier Faces Surge in Christmas Parcel Deliveries
New Plymouth courier driver Jaswinder Singh is experiencing an unprecedented surge in parcel deliveries as the holiday season approaches. With Christmas just around the corner, Singh has found himself balancing an increasing number of packages, likening the task of fitting them into his delivery van to a game of Tetris.
In the lead-up to Christmas, Singh has managed to transport as many as 375 parcels in his Toyota Hiace during peak delivery days. “Tuesday was the busiest day ever for us,” he noted, revealing that he handled around 1,000 parcels on his delivery route alone that day, making up to four trips depending on package sizes.
Record-Breaking Parcel Volume
The demand for parcel deliveries has surged across the region, with New Zealand Post reporting record numbers. On December 16, 2023, the Taranaki region saw a peak of 14,748 parcels delivered, surpassing last year’s record for the same day. Singh, who has worked as a contract driver with New Zealand Post for two years, has even added extra vans and drivers to manage the rising demand as Christmas approaches.
Despite the long hours and intensity of the job, Singh finds satisfaction in delivering smiles to customers. “They’re happy, they’re cheerful; it feels good making sure their presents arrive on time,” he said. He also humorously noted the need to be cautious of dogs while making deliveries.
Increased Demand Following Black Friday
The influx of parcels has not gone unnoticed by Jasen Hesseltine, area manager for Taranaki and Whanganui. He reported a significant increase in activity at the depot since the Black Friday sales, with as many as 32 courier movements occurring each morning. To keep up with the demand, additional contractors have been brought in to assist with daily operations.
“It’s been really busy, especially after Black Friday,” Hesseltine remarked. “People have left their shopping a bit late, but it’s all come at once.” He shared that three large truck and trailer units arrive daily from Auckland, filled with parcels that are sorted into various zones from Mōkau to Hāwera before being dispatched for same-day delivery.
For those who are still hoping to place online orders in time for Christmas, Hesseltine offered a cautionary note: “It’s probably a bit too late, don’t hold your breath,” he advised, underscoring the urgency of the holiday shopping season.
As the festive season continues, couriers like Singh play a vital role in ensuring that gifts arrive on time, navigating the bustling streets of New Plymouth to bring holiday cheer to countless families.
