Adam Hall Wins Silver, Equals New Zealand’s Winter Paralympics Record
Wānaka skier Adam Hall has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a silver medal in the men’s slalom standing at the Milano Cortina Paralympic Winter Games on March 12, 2026. This performance not only elevated him from fourth to second place but also marked his sixth career medal, tying him with Patrick Cooper as New Zealand’s most decorated Winter Paralympian.
Hall recorded a combined time of 1:31.38 across two runs at the competition venue, Olimpia delle Tofane. His second run was particularly impressive; he finished ahead of then-leader Robin Cuche of Switzerland by 0.35 seconds, solidifying his podium position. Hall’s achievement was confirmed when Jules Segers of France was unable to surpass his time.
Key Moments in the Competition
Initially in provisional bronze position, Hall benefited from a misfortune that befell Italian skier Federico Pelizzari, who lost a ski binding during his run and did not finish. The gold medal was claimed by Aleksei Bugaev from Russia, who completed the course in an impressive 1:28.55. Pre-race favourite Arthur Bauchet of France fell out of contention after a significant error in his first run.
Hall reflected on the experience, expressing disbelief at his achievement after starting the day in fourth place. The conditions for the first run included steady snowfall and limited visibility, where Hall clocked a time of 47.80 seconds. He commented, “I don’t know what just happened. After the first run, sitting in fourth, I just had to lay everything out there.”
He further noted the necessity of adapting to the challenging weather, saying, “I knew waking up to all that snow that I had to bring out that Taieri attitude that it is just an ordinary winter day. I just had to attack it and let it rip. It was years and years of experience and leaving nothing behind.”
A Historic Achievement
Hall’s journey in the Paralympic Games began in 2006, and he has since made a significant mark in the slalom discipline, now holding four medals in this category alone. This latest silver medal reinforces not just his personal commitment to excellence but also highlights New Zealand’s growing legacy in winter sports.
With this achievement, Hall has not only added to his medal tally but has also inspired future generations of athletes in New Zealand and beyond. His performance at the Milano Cortina Games will be remembered as a testament to perseverance and skill in the face of challenging conditions.
