All Blacks Legend Desmond “Lloyd” Ashby Passes Away at 94

Desmond “Lloyd” Ashby, a revered figure in New Zealand rugby and one of the oldest living All Blacks, has died at the age of 94. Ashby passed away peacefully at his home in Dunedin on Monday, marking the end of an era for a player who made his mark on the sport.
Ashby played a single test for the All Blacks in 1958 against Australia. His contributions to rugby extended beyond that historic match; he was a key player for Southland during the 1950s. Over the course of his career, he appeared in 59 games for Southland and was instrumental in their victory for the Ranfurly Shield in 1959.
Tributes have poured in for the late rugby icon, notably from his great-nephew, former All Blacks star Justin Marshall. Marshall took to social media to express his condolences and gratitude for Ashby’s influence on his own rugby journey, which included playing 81 tests for the All Blacks. He shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, stating, “A very sad day today. My great-uncle Lloyd Ashby, my Dad’s [Fridge] uncle, passed away.”
Ashby’s legacy in New Zealand rugby is significant, as he not only contributed to the sport as a player but also as a source of inspiration for future generations. His dedication and skill on the field helped shape the game in the country, paving the way for many aspiring athletes.
As rugby fans and former teammates reflect on Ashby’s life and career, his memory will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who loved the game. The rugby community mourns the loss of a true pioneer and a beloved figure.
