Celebrated Artist Opens Tischler & Co Gallery in Wānaka

Renowned artist Michael Tischler has opened the Tischler & Co Fine Art Gallery in Northlake Wānaka, marking a significant milestone in his artistic journey. Known for his large-scale landscape and seascape paintings inspired by New Zealand’s South Island, Tischler aims to connect both locals and visitors with the artistic beauty of the region.
From Texas to New Zealand
Originally from Texas, Tischler moved to Wellington at the age of six before relocating to Australia four years later. He pursued a fine arts degree and has spent over two decades establishing his reputation as an artist. “In that time, I’ve sold paintings to collectors internationally, worked on massive commissioned projects,” he reflected. “I’ve had a few sell-out shows and rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous on epic ‘artist in residencies’, but nothing compares to the joy I feel when teaching others and passing on what I’ve gathered.”
His passion for education has led Tischler to become a well-known figure among art enthusiasts, particularly on YouTube, where he shares his painting techniques. He conducts art tours in Wānaka for students from around the globe, fostering a community of budding artists eager to learn from his expertise.
A New Chapter in Wānaka
Having previously set up his gallery in Lawrence for the past year, Tischler officially opened his new space last week. The reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with Tischler noting, “New Zealand is becoming such an international place that we get traffic from tourists, international visitors, and Kiwis alike. The Kiwi audience is open, receptive, and loaded with ideas.”
As a landscape artist, Tischler is deepening his understanding of the local environment, stating that there are numerous inspiring locations within the Wānaka region. “My favourite spot in the world is the Matukituki Valley,” he shared, emphasizing his connection to the landscape that fuels his creativity.
The gallery features Tischler’s stunning artwork, showcasing pieces created during his painting tours and plein air sessions. He has a clear vision for the space: “I paint for people and I love when people look at the paintings. It is not always about the sale, and it is really nice for people to come and look at the art and hopefully leave and feel inspired in some way.”
Throughout his career, Tischler has drawn inspiration from the old masters, integrating traditional techniques into his own work. “There is a lot of artistic licence that goes into it,” he noted. Now a professional artist since the age of 21, Tischler boasts over 1 million followers across his various social media channels. He expressed enthusiasm about having a gallery that is accessible to the local community, stating, “Having the gallery is something we are really excited about, sharing this with the community.”
Ultimately, Tischler’s true passion lies in teaching. “I love painting pictures and having those on display in the studio, but I love teaching and live for that light bulb moment when they pick it up,” he concluded. His new gallery not only serves as a showcase for his artistry but also as a hub for creativity and inspiration, enriching the cultural landscape of Wānaka.
