The latest recipient of the Community Hero Award is Vani Kapoor, a dedicated volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in Pakuranga, Auckland. Recognized for her significant contributions over the past decade, Kapoor has been instrumental in supporting new migrants as they adapt to life in New Zealand.

Supporting New Migrants

Vani Kapoor, who serves as both an interviewer and life member of CAB Pakuranga, has played a vital role in the organization’s efforts to assist newcomers. Nominated by Louise Boswell, the manager of CAB Pakuranga, Kapoor has been with the organization for ten years. During this time, she has taken on various responsibilities, especially as the coordinator of a service funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to help new settlers.

From 2014 to 2023, Kapoor managed workshops that addressed essential topics for migrants, including employment opportunities, tax advice from Inland Revenue, business start-up guidance, and navigating health services in New Zealand. She also offered training in CV and letter writing, along with immigration support, ensuring that newcomers are well-prepared for their new life.

Community Engagement and Continued Support

When the initial funding for these workshops concluded, Kapoor did not waver in her commitment. She initiated bi-monthly community network meetings that have proven to be both successful and well-attended. These gatherings provide a platform for local organizations to collaborate and connect with the community, enhancing the support network for migrants.

In a testament to her dedication, Kapoor successfully secured a grant from the Howick Local Board to sustain these meetings and continue the workshops for migrants. Her efforts have significantly extended CAB Pakuranga’s reach, allowing the organization to remain responsive to the evolving needs of Auckland’s diverse population.

As Boswell aptly stated, “Vani is a star in our CAB team!” Her initiatives not only foster community cohesion but also empower many who have relocated to New Zealand, making her contributions invaluable.

The Community Hero Award is sponsored by New World Howick, which provides a $50 gift card to recipients. Honorees are featured in local media, recognizing their selfless service and positive impact on the community.
