New Zealand secured a decisive victory against Georgia in their Davis Cup World Group II tie, winning 3-1 in Palmerston North on Sunday. The standout performance came from James Watt, who delivered an impressive singles win over Aleksandre Bakshi, triumphing with a score of 7-6(3), 6-2. This victory allowed New Zealand to advance to a playoff in the World Group I, while Georgia will compete in a Group II playoff next year.

The match took place at the Fly Palmy Arena, where the New Zealand team demonstrated resilience and teamwork. After a thrilling doubles match, where Ajeet Rai and Finn Reynolds overcame a set deficit to defeat Bakshi and Alexandre Metreveli 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(4), the momentum swung in New Zealand’s favor. Prior to this, the tie was level at 1-1 after Bakshi had beaten Jack Toutit in straight sets.

Watt, ranked 569 in the world, performed significantly above his ranking throughout the tournament. He had previously defeated Zura Tkemaladze in the opening match on Saturday. Following his victory over Bakshi, the final rubber between Toutit and Tkemaladze was rendered unnecessary, as the outcome was already decided.

Following his match, Watt celebrated with his teammates on the court. He expressed gratitude to the supportive crowd, saying, “This is a dream come true for me.” He attributed his success to a powerful serving game, having delivered 13 aces against Bakshi. Watt remarked, “I got up there and thought, ‘I am going to go after it.’ It got me out of a few sticky situations and got me through in the end as well.”

This victory marks an important step for New Zealand in their Davis Cup journey, showcasing both individual talent and effective teamwork. The players’ performance and determination highlight New Zealand’s potential as they prepare for future challenges on the international stage.
