Insurer Rejects Claim for Lost Ruby from Wedding Ring
A woman recently faced disappointment when her insurer denied her claim for a lost ruby from her wedding ring, highlighting the importance of understanding insurance coverage. The case caught the attention of Consumer NZ, which noted that this incident serves as a reminder for consumers to thoroughly review their insurance policies.
The woman had proudly worn her wedding ring daily for 42 years until the ruby stone unexpectedly fell out. Upon filing her claim, the insurer sought a jeweller’s report to assess the situation. The report determined that the claws securing the ruby had deteriorated over time, leading to the stone’s loss. The insurer ultimately declined the claim, citing that her policy did not extend coverage for wear and tear.
Following the insurer’s decision, the woman escalated her complaint to the Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO). However, the IFSO upheld the insurer’s conclusion, affirming that the claim was not valid under the existing policy terms.
A spokesperson for Consumer NZ emphasized the variability in insurance policies, stating, “What is standard in one insurance policy could be a benefit in another, or might not be covered at all.” This statement reflects the diverse nature of insurance coverage, which may include items such as credit cards, jewellery, keys, and professional tools, while excluding others.
Understanding the nuances of insurance coverage is essential. The spokesperson cautioned that consumers may overlook benefits available in their policies, saying, “That’s why it always pays to check the cover by speaking to your insurer to understand exactly what you’re paying for.”
This case serves as a vital reminder for individuals to review their insurance policies carefully and engage in discussions with their insurers. By doing so, consumers can ensure that they have adequate coverage for their valuable items, potentially avoiding future disappointments.
