Record $5.6 Million Tuna Sale Stuns Tokyo Fish Market
A single tuna has made headlines after fetching a record-breaking $5.6 million at the Tokyo fish market. Weighing in at 243 kilograms (approximately 536 pounds), the remarkable catch was purchased by Kiyomura Corp, the operator of the popular sushi restaurant chain Sushizanmai.
Kiyoshi Kimura, the chief of Kiyomura, expressed his hopes for a revitalized economy this year, referencing the administration of Japan’s first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi. “I hope the economy will get better this year. The Takaichi administration pledged to work, work, work, so Sushizanmai will work, work, work too,” Kimura stated. He added, “I hope this bid will cheer everyone up.”
This year’s winning bid surpassed Kiyomura’s own previous record of 333.6 million yen set in 2019. Kimura noted his surprise at the final price, saying, “I thought that (the winning bid) would come in a little bit lower, maybe around 400 million or 300 million yen, but it turned out to be over 500 million.”
From Market to Menu
Following the auction, the giant tuna was transported to Sushizanmai’s flagship branch. There, it was sliced and prepared for distribution to restaurants across Japan. Kimura confirmed that the tuna dishes would be sold at the usual prices, making this extravagant purchase accessible to regular customers.
The sale of this tuna reflects not just a culinary tradition but also a significant aspect of Japanese culture. The annual New Year auction at the Tokyo fish market is known for its high-stakes bidding, often leading to record sums being paid for premium fish.
As the world watches, the sale highlights both the enduring demand for high-quality seafood and the economic sentiments surrounding Japan’s recovery efforts. Kimura’s bold investment in the tuna market may serve as a bellwether for consumer confidence and economic growth in the country.
