James Gunn Confirms Ana Nogueira as Writer for DCU’s Wonder Woman

The upcoming Wonder Woman film in the DC Universe (DCU) has secured its lead writer, with James Gunn announcing that Ana Nogueira will pen the script. This confirmation came via a post on Threads on July 21, 2023, following initial reports from The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter that Nogueira had been chosen for the project.
Nogueira is no stranger to the DCU, having previously written the screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which has been rebranded simply as Supergirl. Her involvement in the Wonder Woman film marks her second collaboration with DC Studios, underscoring the studio’s confidence in her writing abilities. Gunn had initially hinted at a new Wonder Woman film in mid-May, generating excitement among fans eager for the next chapter of this iconic character.
Future Projects and Development Updates
In addition to Wonder Woman, Nogueira is reportedly working on a screenplay for a live-action adaptation of Teen Titans Go!, though details on this project remain limited. The announcement of her role in Wonder Woman comes as Gunn and co-head Peter Safran are actively fast-tracking several projects within the DCU, with Wonder Woman being a priority.
Despite the excitement surrounding Nogueira’s hiring, there are still unanswered questions regarding the film’s casting and direction. Gunn stated during a July 18 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that no actors have been cast for the role of Diana Prince, also known as Wonder Woman. He acknowledged the need to identify both a lead actress and a director soon to minimize speculation and rumors within the industry.
Gunn’s Vision for the DCU
In a separate interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn addressed the pace of development for the Wonder Woman project. He clarified that while he views Wonder Woman as a significant aspect of his cinematic universe, it must not overshadow other pressing projects. He remarked, “I don’t know what they [industry insiders] mean by fast-tracking. I’ve always had Wonder Woman as a priority, but we got the first few things started.”
Gunn highlighted that the DCU requires a focused approach to ensure that key characters, like Wonder Woman and Batman, are developed effectively. He expressed the urgency to finalize the writing process and emphasized the importance of working with writers who can produce quality scripts without extensive delays.
The anticipation for the Wonder Woman film continues to grow, with fans eagerly awaiting updates on both the casting and directorial choices. As Gunn and Safran navigate the creative landscape of the DC Universe, the involvement of talented writers such as Nogueira is a promising sign for the future of these beloved characters.
