New Zealand Film A Dog’s Show Brings Classic Series to Life
A new drama-comedy film titled A Dog’s Show is currently being filmed across Wellington and Wairarapa, drawing inspiration from a classic New Zealand television series renowned for its portrayal of canine antics and rural life. Directed by Alex Galvin, this adaptation aims to revive the cherished essence of the original show, which captivated audiences with its unique blend of humor and heart.
The film features an impressive cast, including Graham McTavish (known for his roles in Outlander and The Hobbit), David Wenham (from The Lord of the Rings and Lion), and Theresa Healey (of Go Girls fame). They are joined by promising newcomer Unaiki Stephens-Jones. Galvin expressed his enthusiasm about the cast, stating, “Their talent and energy bring a fresh dimension to the story, and alongside Graham, we have something truly special in the making.”
The narrative centers on the connections between people, animals, and the land, reflecting the deep-rooted relationships found in New Zealand’s rural communities. Galvin, reminiscing about his childhood, noted that watching A Dog’s Show every Sunday night with his family left a lasting impression. “The simple, unpretentious idea of one farmer and two dogs in a battle of wits with six sheep would transfix the whole nation,” he recalled. The tension of each episode often left his mother needing to step away due to the emotional stakes involved.
Galvin’s vision for the film seeks to showcase not only the excitement of sheepdog trials but also the rich character of New Zealand’s farming communities. He aims to create a poignant story that resonates with audiences while celebrating the country’s iconic landscapes.
The production has garnered significant talent behind the scenes as well. Celia Jaspers, a seasoned producer based in Wairarapa, brings over 30 years of experience in film and television. Jaspers has served as the story producer and director of New Zealand’s longest-running television program, Country Calendar, since 2015. Her extensive background includes producing and directing numerous primetime factual and documentary series for notable networks such as TVNZ and Discovery Channel.
Another key figure in the production is Mark Westerby, a creative producer with a wealth of experience in feature films and major cultural events. As the founder of SuperCut, he has worked on trailers and promotional content for acclaimed titles. Additionally, Tim White, a veteran producer with a rich history in Australian and New Zealand cinema, serves as an executive producer for the film.
As the filming progresses, A Dog’s Show aims to capture the essence of rural New Zealand while providing audiences with a heartwarming and entertaining experience. The film not only seeks to honor the legacy of the original television series but also to introduce its charm to a new generation of viewers.
