Partygoers Advised to Test Drugs Before New Year Celebrations
As New Year celebrations approach, partygoers in New Zealand are being urged to have their drugs tested to ensure safety. KnowYourStuff will provide drug testing services at major festivals, including the AUM New Years Festival, Northern Bass, Twisted Frequency, and Rhythm and Alps in Wānaka. Additionally, the Drug Foundation will operate at Gisborne’s Rhythm and Vines.
KnowYourStuff spokesperson Casey Spearin emphasized the importance of drug testing, stating that approximately one in ten drugs sold on the black market do not match their advertised identities. “We recommend that anyone who is planning on taking drugs this summer tries to get them checked before they do consume if possible,” Spearin said. She noted that even trusted sources can inadvertently sell dangerous substances.
Concerns have been raised about the presence of synthetic cathinones, often referred to as “bath salts,” which are sometimes sold as MDMA (ecstasy). These substances can lead to unexpected and potentially life-threatening reactions. Spearin highlighted the risks associated with high-dose pills, revealing that some ecstasy pills may contain two to three times the expected dose of MDMA. “I think there was one found that had nine or more doses in it,” she warned.
There has also been an increase in the use of cocaine and ketamine, with some samples failing to be authentic. Spearin reassured festival-goers that drug testing remains free, anonymous, confidential, and legal. A temporary law that legalized drug checking was made permanent in 2021, with support from various political parties. The then-Health Minister Andrew Little stated that pill testing has been shown to enhance safety by identifying dangerous substances before they can be consumed.
The initiative has garnered significant public support, although it faced opposition from the National Party. With the festive season upon us, KnowYourStuff’s drug testing services aim to reduce the risks associated with illicit drug use, ensuring that partygoers can enjoy their celebrations more safely.
The presence of drug testing at these popular events is a proactive measure to protect the health of attendees. As individuals prepare for the New Year, awareness and caution are key to enjoying the festivities responsibly.
