The Temuka Art Guild has opened its fourth annual holiday pop-up gallery on King Street, showcasing a diverse range of artworks from regional artists. This initiative aims to enhance the community’s festive spirit and promote local talent during the Christmas season. According to co-organiser Sandra Kelly, as long as the space remains unoccupied, the pop-up shop will continue to be a seasonal fixture.

The gallery features a collection of artworks from 12 guild members, including artists who have gained international recognition. With 150 paintings on display, the selection is dynamic, with pieces changing frequently as they are sold. Each artist brings a unique approach to their craft; for instance, Anne Gregerson produces up to 200 artworks annually, while Kelly has created only two this year. Kelly emphasizes that the value of an artwork lies not in its creation speed, but in the extensive training and experimentation an artist undertakes throughout their career.

Celebrating Local Talent and Legacy

In addition to the guild’s members, the pop-up gallery is also showcasing works by the late John Kelman, a noted artist from Milford. The guild possesses a significant collection of his artwork, framing and displaying a selection each year to honor his legacy.

The pop-up shop has become increasingly popular, with visitors arriving specifically to view the art before exploring local cafés. Kelly notes that the gallery’s reputation for featuring “high calibre of artwork” has contributed to its success. This year, the pop-up is open six days a week, from 10 AM to 4 PM, and will remain closed on Sundays.

The Temuka Art Guild’s initiative not only supports local artists but also creates a vibrant cultural space for the community during the holiday season. As the gallery continues to attract attention, it reinforces the importance of supporting local art and fostering creativity within the region.
