Wairarapa Celebrates First Christmas Parade with Enthusiastic Turnout
Hundreds gathered in Wairarapa for the inaugural Christmas parade of the season on December 2, 2023. Organisers estimated that around 2,000 spectators filled the streets of Carterton, from High Street to Broadway and down to Carrington Park, to witness Santa’s arrival alongside over 30 festive floats.
Mayor Steve Cretney described the event as “a brilliant day,” highlighting the turnout as a testament to the community spirit. “It was great to see so many people come together to celebrate the Carterton Rotary Christmas Parade, in what can really only be described as perfect ‘Kiwi Christmas’ weather,” he stated. Cretney emphasized the significance of the parade in bringing the community together and setting a joyous tone for the festive season ahead. He encouraged residents to participate in other free Christmas events planned in Carterton, wishing everyone a “Merry Kirihimete!”
The parade featured a diverse array of floats, including hot rod cars, vintage tractors, and performances from local school bands. Rod O’Leary, the co-ordinator for the Rotary Christmas Parade, noted the “awesome turnout,” with attendees of all ages lining the route to enjoy the festivities. “It was a great crowd,” he remarked, adding, “The weather was outstanding. It was a typical Kiwi country Christmas and a glorious Carterton day.”
In appreciation of the community effort, Cretney expressed gratitude towards the event’s organisers, local businesses, schools, and community groups, acknowledging their contributions to the day’s success. The Carterton Council supported the parade by allocating up to $8,000 to facilitate the event.
The enthusiasm for the parade reflects a broader community engagement, as residents prepare for a bustling holiday season in Wairarapa.
