Author Chanelle Moriah Opens Up About Dyslexia Diagnosis at 25
Chanelle Moriah, a Wellington-based author and illustrator, received a diagnosis of dyslexia at the age of 25, a revelation that, while not unexpected, challenged her understanding of the condition. “What was surprising was reading the results and learning that dyslexia wasn’t at all what I thought it was,” Moriah remarked. She had long suspected she had dyslexia but realized her assumptions were misguided.
Moriah’s journey with neurodiversity began earlier, as she was diagnosed with autism at 21 and ADHD at 22. Her recent diagnosis of dyslexia coincided with a difficult period in her life. At the beginning of 2024, she was also diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a battle that led her to publish her new book, I Am Dyslexic.
Raising Awareness Through Personal Experience
Moriah began writing I Am Dyslexic shortly after completing her chemotherapy treatment. The book aims to provide insight into dyslexia, helping friends and family understand the experiences of those living with this condition. “I want to create a resource that will help others,” she explained. “It’s important for people to understand neurodiversity and the unique challenges that come with it.”
Despite the challenges posed by her diagnoses, Moriah remains committed to advocating for awareness and understanding of dyslexia. She believes that sharing her story can foster empathy and support for others who may be navigating similar paths.
As she continues her journey, Moriah emphasizes the importance of acceptance and understanding in discussions surrounding neurodiversity. Her experiences have shaped her perspective, allowing her to approach her work with empathy and insight.
Personal Triumph Amid Challenges
Moriah’s resilience is evident not only in her literary work but also in her personal life. Facing both a cancer diagnosis and the complexities of neurodiversity has been an arduous journey. Yet, she remains focused on her mission to educate and inspire others.
The publication of I Am Dyslexic represents not only a professional milestone but also a personal triumph for Moriah. It serves as a testament to her strength and determination in the face of adversity. She hopes that by sharing her experiences, she can contribute to a broader understanding of dyslexia and encourage others to embrace their neurodiversity.
Through her work, Moriah aims to create a more inclusive environment for those with dyslexia and other neurodiverse conditions. Her story is a reminder of the importance of compassion and awareness in fostering understanding and support in society.
