Qatari Chess Team Competes at Fujairah World Championship
The Qatari national chess team is competing in the inaugural Fujairah World Chess Championship, which takes place in Abu Dhabi until September 2, 2023. This prestigious tournament has attracted nearly 600 players from 75 countries, showcasing a diverse range of talent across three main categories.
Overview of the Tournament
The championship is divided into three categories: the Superstar category for players rated 2560 and above, featuring 44 top-ranked international players; the Masters Championship for players rated above 2200, with approximately 330 participants; and the Open Championship for players rated below 2200. A total prize pool of $125,000 will be awarded to the top performers.
Representing Qatar are notable players including Grandmaster Hussein Aziz, along with Khaled Al-Jumaat, Hamad Al-Kuwari, Turki Al-Kuwari, Fahad Al-Mansouri, Ibrahim Al-Janahi, Saif Ahmed, Layan Al-Qassabi, and Rawda Al-Qassabi. This strong lineup reflects Qatar’s commitment to excellence in the sport.
Referees and Organizational Highlights
In addition to the players, Qatari international referee Sarah Al Mohannadi is participating in the International Fair Play Arbitration Course, which runs concurrently with the tournament from August 28-31, 2023.
Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association, expressed optimism regarding the team’s prospects, highlighting the high level of competition, with many players ranked among the world’s top 100. He praised the team’s preparation and acknowledged the event’s robust international presence and competitive spirit.
Al Mudahka also commended the Fujairah Chess Club for its excellent organization of the tournament. He noted that matches are being streamed live on the FIDE website and other major platforms. His gratitude extended to Dr. Abdullah Al Barakat, Chairman of the Fujairah Chess Club, for successfully hosting the event, which has become a significant milestone in the international chess community.
The participation of the Qatari national team in the Fujairah World Chess Championship not only highlights the nation’s growing prominence in the chess world but also represents an opportunity for cultural exchange and sportsmanship on a global scale.
