Volunteers Needed for Free Skin-Cancer Screening Bus in Gore
The Lions Clubs of New Zealand are seeking volunteers to assist with a mobile skin-cancer screening initiative scheduled for September 11 and 12, 2023. This program, funded by the Lions Cancer Trust, offers free early detection services for melanoma to residents throughout the country, particularly benefiting areas like Southland, where skin cancer often goes undiagnosed.
The screening bus will be stationed at the Gore RSA, providing community members with the opportunity to receive vital checkups. Those interested in being screened can ensure they are not at risk or, if necessary, seek further medical assistance. Wendy Goodwin, a trustee of the Lions Cancer Trust, is leading this initiative and highlighted the need for volunteers with medical expertise to maximize the impact of the event.
To effectively manage the two-day clinic, the trust is looking for individuals such as doctors, nurses, and nurse practitioners. “We want to get as many bookings as possible,” Goodwin stated, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive coverage during the screening days. She noted that all necessary equipment for the screenings will be provided.
Goodwin underscored the significance of early detection in combating skin cancer, referring to melanoma as “a sneaky little bugger” that can quietly develop without symptoms. She expressed concern for those who may not have access to regular screenings due to financial constraints or time limitations, stating, “We have the opportunity to give a comprehensive check.”
The initiative has already proven successful in helping New Zealanders identify skin cancer early. Goodwin pointed out, “The most effective way to increase your chance of survival from skin cancer is early detection and treatment.” This project is driven by the Lions Clubs, with funding sourced from various sponsors and community support.
Notably, the Gore Districts Memorial RSA contributed $10,700 through fundraising efforts, while many local businesses have also supported the cause. To volunteer for this essential program, interested individuals are encouraged to email the administration team at the Lions Cancer Trust or contact Wendy Goodwin directly at [email protected].
By stepping forward, volunteers can play a crucial role in potentially saving lives through access to vital health services in their community.
