Wellness Entrepreneur Transforms Home into Pilates Studio Haven
Mibella Villafana, a wellness entrepreneur, has recently transformed her home in Grey Lynn, Auckland, into a vibrant Pilates studio named Cora Studio. This studio, which opened in September 2023, offers a range of services including reformer Pilates, a sauna, contrast therapy, and IV infusions tailored for women and members of the LGBTQI+ community.
Villafana, who is originally from San Diego, California, has lived in multiple countries, including Spain and Australia, before settling in New Zealand a decade ago. At 34, she shares her home with her partner, former rugby player and entrepreneur Marc Ellis, and their blended family comprising four children: Sophia (15), Tommy (14), Otis (10), and Maverick (8), along with their cat, Goosey.
From Personal Journey to Business Venture
Villafana’s journey into wellness began with her academic aspirations. Initially inspired by her father, a dental surgeon, she considered a career in medicine but eventually gravitated towards sports. She started gymnastics at a young age, competing until she was 16, before shifting her focus to yoga. Her educational background includes a degree in arts and psychology, which she later combined with her passion for teaching yoga.
In 2015, Villafana moved to Auckland with her former partner and later relocated to Marc’s residence two years ago. The house, one of the oldest in the area built by the Warnock brothers in the late 1800s, underwent renovations, including updates to the kitchen. Both Villafana and Ellis enjoy entertaining, though they prefer barbecues to extensive cooking.
Opening her own Pilates studio had long been a dream for Villafana. Marc, who has participated in her classes, encouraged her to pursue this passion, leading to the transformation of his man cave and arcade room into a functional studio. The renovation included merging two rooms, creating a bright space with cream floors and terracotta pink walls, where clients can relax and change before and after classes.
A Growing Community and Wellness Hub
Since its opening, Cora Studio has offered around 30 classes each week, becoming a popular destination for wellness enthusiasts. The studio’s sauna and hot and cold plunge pools have also garnered significant interest.
Villafana expressed her satisfaction with the response from the community, noting the studio’s role in fostering a social environment. “I’m pleased at how well the studio has been received and the wellness community we’re creating,” she stated.
Living in Grey Lynn has further enhanced her experience. The neighbourhood is known for its vibrant community of independent shops and eateries, as well as its artistic residents. Villafana particularly enjoys dining at local establishments like Lilian on Richmond Road, famous for its wood-fired octopus, and Ozone, which serves excellent coffee.
Outside of her professional life, Villafana embraces the coastal lifestyle, often visiting nearby beaches to enjoy the ocean, whether during summer or winter. Her connection to the area reflects her commitment to both her family and her passion for wellness, making her journey an inspiring story of personal and professional growth.
