Art director Yolanta Woldendorp has embraced a fulfilling lifestyle on a 3.2-hectare block in Helensville, New Zealand, where she resides with her partner Odessa Holmes, two horses, and two cats. The couple’s lifestyle reflects their passion for nature, as Woldendorp recently produced and art directed the book New Zealand Rustic, which was published in October and showcases homes inspired by the natural environment.

Woldendorp, originally from Perth, Western Australia, grew up surrounded by wildlife, including snakes and lizards. Her late father, Richard Woldendorp, was a renowned photographer who published 30 books and received the Order of Australia honor. His legacy ignited her love for photography, although she ultimately chose to pursue a career in graphic design. By the age of 21, she had become a magazine art director, leading projects for various prominent publications. However, seeking new challenges, she moved to New Zealand in 1990, where she found a new home and inspiration.

In partnership with writer Kate Coughlan, Woldendorp co-founded NZ Life & Leisure Magazine in 2005, which they successfully ran until last year. Since then, she has focused on freelancing, continuing to channel her creativity into book design. Alongside New Zealand Rustic, she also designed and produced a new book for chef Nadia Lim.

Woldendorp’s current home is a stunning two-storey American barn-style house made from recycled timber, built approximately 40 years ago. The couple moved to their Helensville property 15 years ago, looking for space for their horses. They have since renovated the house, repairing windows, painting, and adding solar panels. Their kitchen and bathroom were designed in-house, featuring recycled materials, including pressed black tin as a nod to Woldendorp’s Australian roots.

Upon acquiring the property, Woldendorp and Holmes revitalized the paddocks, which were in poor condition. Their efforts have paid off, as the property is now adorned with mature fruit trees, including plums, peaches, and two large avocado trees. The couple also established three sizeable vegetable beds, allowing them to grow much of their own food, significantly reducing grocery costs while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The couple appreciates the tranquility of rural life. Woldendorp expressed her reluctance to return to city living, stating, “I love being surrounded by trees and experiencing the changing seasons.” From her home, she can gaze out at the horses while remaining close enough to Auckland to maintain social connections and visit galleries.

Helensville retains its charm as an unpretentious town, where residents can comfortably wear their Red Band gumboots to the supermarket. Nearby, residents can enjoy natural wonders such as Woodhill Forest and Muriwai Beach, both ideal locations for horseback riding and immersing oneself in nature.

When it comes to dining out, Woldendorp recommends The Butcher Baker, a restaurant set in a former bakery on Commercial Road. Known for its open-fire cooking, the restaurant serves dishes like charred cauliflower and exquisite crayfish tortellini. Another favorite is The Real Bread Project, located on Mill Road, where Woldendorp is particularly fond of their almond croissants and multi-grain sourdough bread.

Woldendorp’s life in Helensville exemplifies a successful blend of creativity, sustainability, and community, reflecting her deep appreciation for both nature and the arts. As she continues to contribute to New Zealand’s artistic landscape, her journey serves as an inspiring testament to the joys of embracing a lifestyle closely connected to one’s passions.
