Political Cartoonist Garrick Tremain Passes Away at 84

Garrick Tremain, a renowned political cartoonist and former landscape painter from New Zealand, has passed away at the age of 84. Tremain’s career in political cartooning spanned over three decades, during which he became known for his sharp observations on sensitive political and cultural issues. He died on Saturday at Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown after battling angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

Born in 1941, Tremain transitioned to political cartooning in 1988 after establishing himself as a professional painter. He quickly made a name for himself, producing daily cartoons for major publications such as the Otago Daily Times and The Press. His work earned him both acclaim and criticism, reflecting his willingness to engage with contentious subjects.

Throughout his career, Tremain’s cartoons resonated with audiences for their incisive wit and clarity. His ability to challenge those in power often sparked both admiration and backlash. In 2019, a cartoon addressing the measles epidemic in Samoa drew significant criticism for its tone and timing, leading to an apology from the Otago Daily Times and a reassessment of Tremain’s role at the newspaper.

While Tremain expressed regret over the controversy, he also criticized the newspaper’s response, arguing it was a concession to political correctness. He continued to create cartoons independently, sharing his work with fans via email at no charge until earlier this year, when he shifted his focus to writing his autobiography, published in October 2023.

As he faced the end of his life, Tremain reflected on his lengthy career and the experiences it brought him. “I’ve had a bloody fantastic life,” he stated in an interview with The Press. “I wish I wasn’t dying, but I’m still feeling good and full of energy. I think about how fortunate I was to be born in this country at this time.”

Tremain’s passing has sparked tributes from various figures, including the Taxpayers’ Union, which he supported. Executive Director Jordan Williams praised Tremain’s ability to convey political truths with intelligence and wit: “For decades, Garrick’s work cut through political spin with intelligence, clarity, and unmistakable wit,” Williams remarked.

Political commentator Frank Newman described Tremain as “a truly outstanding individual,” highlighting his talent and character. Tremain’s legacy as one of New Zealand’s most talented political cartoonists remains, characterized by his insightful, humorous, and sometimes uncomfortable commentary on the issues of his time.
